The Stories
Local Dirt

Founded: 2005
Local Dirt
What they do: Localdirt.com connects small and medium farmers with stores and restaurants -- anyone who wants fresh, locally grown farm products.
Inspiration: Madison is surrounded by Wisconsin farms, but the grocery store where Heather Hilleren worked didn't feature local farm products. She found out the reason was pure economics -- it was faster and easier for stores to buy from food distributors.
About the business: Heather created Localdirt.com, a website giving small and medium farmers the advantages of large distributors – connecting farmers directly with buyers of fresh farm products. The concept was so good, within a year the project went national.
Axiom(s) exemplified: Apply new technology to an existing process.
